Chrome 20 browser released: exclusive 64-bit Linux Flash, fewer MacBook crashes
If your new MacBook is having kernel panics, or you're forced to run a 32-bit browser in Linux because you need Flash, Google's brought relief with version 20 of Chrome. While acting sheepish about "yet another release," the Chrome Blog said "hundreds of bugs" were fixed, including a MacBook resource leak issue which was temporarily patched by disabling some GPU features. Also, Linux users will finally get full 64-bit support for Flash with Adobe's PPAPI "Pepper" version, but since it was made exclusively for Chrome, Penguin users will be stuck with that browser if they want the feature. To get it, check the source after the br... oh, right, background update. Nevermind.

Feminism?s big debt to the genius of Nora Ephron
Ephron knew that the most pointed weapon of all is humour, from her treatise on the attraction and incompatibility of the sexes in When Harry Met Sally, which gave us the glamour of Manhattan but the dating horrors, sexual tensions and frustrations of modern life everywhere. The hairdos and jackets have dated since 1989 but the repartee burns as bright as ever and the Katz deli orgasm scene is still a show-stopper.
Who cares if Meg Ryan?s Sally Albright was a journalist who seemed to spend more time at lunch with her mate Carrie Fisher than working? Or that Billy Crystal?s droll Harry was a political consultant with no discernible interest in politics? Ephron?s ability to combine crackling one-liners about exes? new girlfriends ? ?What?s she like?? ?Thin, pretty, big tits. Your basic nightmare? ? with the search for love, not just sex, in the city, lifted her into the pantheon of great cinema writers.
?I interviewed Ephron when You?ve got Mail came out and was struck by how seriously she took her feminism, for all her lightness of touch. She had, she told me, come out of a generation in which girls like her went to smart colleges but were not expected to achieve much in their careers.
Looking around the room decades later at a group of successful baby-boomers, she noted that they were ?the world?s best?dressed, oppressed group?. Yet in Silkwood, whose script bagged an Oscar, she broke out of a metropolitan-chic milieu to make a film about environmental conditions in blue-collar America which was way ahead of its time.
That mixture of the serious and playful inspired me as a young writer. Observations on female physical insecurities, like the essay I Feel Bad about My Neck, were triumphs of psychology and observation. Ephron truly believed men and women could be happier if they shared more of their uncertainties.
One of the sub-texts of the Harry-Sally relationship is that they have to learn to stop speaking in the quips and statements of their types: Beatrice and Benedict on the Upper East Side. Her movie Heartburn was a tear-jerker about faithlessness in marriage yet uplifting and hopeful.
?There was an old-school, spontaneous New York kindness in Nora too. Interviewing her at the Dorchester, I produced a messy nose-bleed just as we sat down on the silk chairs. The PR gazed in horror and insisted that I leave. Nora was having none of it, ministered to me herself ? and insisted that we still had our allocated time. Later, I got a note suggesting I expense the dry-cleaning bill as ?nose-bleed, brought on by over-talkative American?.
What a miss she will be. Her words made us busy, vain and fearful men and women on both sides of the Atlantic feel a little better about ourselves. No small thing, that.

Sergey Brin demos Project Glass onstage at Google I/O (video)
It's hard to ignore Google's X Lab-born Project Glass. News of the slim-lined, scifi goggles' existence first surfaced this past February and it wasn't long after that Mountain View's own elite began to flaunt the heads-up display in public. While little of the device's true purpose and functionality is known, we have been privy to certain features over the past few months, like photo sharing to Google+ and even its ability to overlay Maps. Though product lead Steve Lee shrugged off rumors of a late 2012 launch, it does appear the company's itching to spill a few more (jelly) beans at today's I/O conference.
To do that, Sergey Brin rushed onstage at Google I/O wearing the glass units to give us a brief live action demo courtesy of a skydive over San Francisco. Video of the jump, performed by four divers in a blimp, was streamed live through Google Hangouts to attendees at the Moscone Center. In keeping with the extreme vibe of this demonstration, the showcase was handed off to bikers on the rooftop, also outfitted with the lenses, who jumped from building to building via ramp and then eventually cycled into the arena and right up to Sergey, himself. As a finishing touch, Brin also snapped a shot of the team using his own headset. All told, it's a pretty incredible way to once again officially tease this forward-looking tech.
Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's opening keynote at our event hub!

Scumbag Gamer - Video Games - Memes, Captions, and Funny ...
PCs are outdated within a few months of obtaining them. The high cost of the best parts means that unless you?re rich, you likely won?t be able to afford both the system and the game. If you buy the not-quite-so-good parts, you end up spending more because they still cost a lot and now you have a shorter time to use them before needing to upgrade your hardware. It?s not as much of a problem if you buy AMD, but too many people buy Intel instead of AMD, which provides an inferior processor that requires frequent mainboard upgrades as Intel has a phobia against using the same processor socket for 3 generations.
Behold the waning of PC gaming: The constant need for hardware upgrades. Remember when you had a CD, a PC, and adequate hardware? I do, and it?s been far too long since you could pop a game in and reasonably expect it to work with your system without looking at the requirements.

Ann Curry Confirms Today Show Departure
Ann Curry is ready to say goodbye.
With the rumors of this Today Show co-host's departure growing stronger by the second, Curry came out yesterday and acknowledged them herself, admitting her run is over and making it sound as if the announcement will be made this morning. And it won't be easy.
It's "going to be a bit of a tough day," Curry told USA Today in a phone interview. "I'm going to have to tell our viewers. That's what makes me more emotional than anything. I don't want to leave them. I love them. And I will really miss them."
Curry added that she isn't sure who first leaked the story of her firing and she feels like she could have benefited from more time to work out the "kinks" in the broadcast after just a year behind the desk.
"I know I am not to blame for the ratings worries. And my bosses have said to me there are many factors involved. There is no doubt that the rating wars have become meaner and less focused on our responsibilities as journalists... And the show is still number-one in terms of ratings."
Curry is expected to be named Today Show anchor-at-large and NBC News national/international correspondent. Savannah Guthrie will likely take her anchoring post.
Are you happy to see Curry go?

customization in public education can ease tensions over testing
Discussions about how best to improve student learning often get contentious, so at redefinED we try to make a positive contribution by identifying areas of possible common ground and clarifying the historical record when we see errors or omissions. Rita M. Solnet?s recent Huffington Post column on how Florida might better utilize its standardized testing data gives us an opportunity to do both.
Rita is a founder of Parents Across America, a group that opposes excessive reliance on high-stakes standardized tests. And since Rita lives in Florida, she is particularly unhappy with how Florida uses ? or, she would say, abuses ? its state testing data. Rita ends her column with some ideas that provide the basis for common ground, but her piece also includes some erroneous Florida history, which I want to correct.
In 1991, the Florida Legislature passed the Education Reform and Accountability Act, commonly known as Blueprint 2000. Florida had experimented with giving teachers and schools more decision-making power in the late 1980s, and Blueprint 2000 was intended to accelerate this effort.? The grand bargain was that state and local government would stop micromanaging schools in exchange for individual schools being held accountable for results.
While the legislation passed with strong bipartisan support, the primary advocates were all Democrats. They included Gov. Lawton Chiles, Lt. Gov. Buddy McKay, Commissioner of Education Betty Castor, Rep. Doug ?Tim? Jamerson and Sen. George Kirkpatrick.?
Two months after the legislation passed, the Florida Commission on Education Reform and Accountability was convened to create the legislatively mandated standards, assessments and accountability system. I was the teachers union president in Pinellas County in 1991, and Commissioner Castor appointed me to be one of three teacher representatives on the commission.
The U.S. Department of Labor released the Secretary of Labor?s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) report in June 1991, outlining the knowledge and skills students would need to succeed in the 21st Century.?Our commission was impressed and decided to base Florida?s standards on the SCANS recommendations, which included literacy skills (reading, writing, mathematics), thinking skills (problem solving, decision making), personal qualities (honesty/integrity), resource management (time, money), information management (organizing, processing, interpreting),? and technological competence.
Several commissioners argued that we could measure the SCANS standards using an International Baccalaureate-type assessment system that included multiple internal and external assessments, but the Florida Department of Education?s student testing staff strongly disagreed. Its concerns were legal and operational.
In 1978, the Legislature passed a law requiring students to pass a minimum competency test to receive a high school diploma. This led to a lawsuit (Debra P v. Turlington, 1981) that claimed the test was racially discriminatory, given the disproportionately high number of black students who failed it. Eventually, the federal courts ruled the test constitutional, but only after delaying its implementation as a graduation requirement and convincing the DOE staff that Florida should stick with traditional standardized exams that measure basic literacy skills only.
In public hearings around the state, classroom teachers also opposed including authentic or portfolio assessments in the state system because of the additional workload. By 1993, the state?s Democratic leadership had decided to assess reading, writing and mathematics with only an annual standardized test, and the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) was born.
That left commissioners with only the issue of accountability to be resolved, and again we were divided. Commissioner Castor had brought in a deputy from New Jersey named Sandy McCarroll, who was a big advocate?for state government taking over failing schools. The teachers, school board members and parents on the commission all opposed this approach, and the commission became deadlocked.? Commissioner Castor threw in the towel and resigned in 1994 to become president of the University of South Florida. Gov. Chiles appointed Doug Jamerson to be the interim education commissioner, but the stalemate remained. Jamerson was then defeated by Frank Brogan in the fall of 1994, and Brogan broke the logjam by pushing through more state control.
I didn?t believe we could regulate and coerce our way to excellence. So in 1995, I resigned from the commission. In her column, Rita writes that the commission ?embarked upon its ?accountability? journey in 1995,? but by 1995 the key policy decisions had been made.
Jeb Bush was elected governor in 1998, and Frank Brogan was his lieutenant governor.?Once elected, Gov. Bush used FCAT results to pressure school districts to spend more resources on meeting the needs of disadvantaged students, and it worked. I remain skeptical that more government regulation is the key to educational excellence. But those were the only tools available to Gov. Bush and he used them effectively for a noble purpose.
Rita ended her column by calling for a state assessment and accountability system that is more child-centered and?less punitive, that provides diagnostic information and allows teachers to focus on the whole child. These ideas have the potential for uniting current political adversaries.
Jeb Bush believes the future of public education is customization. So?does John Wilson, the former executive director of the nation?s largest teachers union, the National Education Association. John recently wrote, ?In the 21st century, one size does not fit all ? Parents want to choose the school that best fits their children. Let?s not stifle this customization, but embrace it.?
In addition to helping Jeb Bush, John Wilson and, hopefully, Rita Solnet find common ground, a public education system organized around customization will transform assessment and accountability. Teachers will be empowered to innovate and create more diverse learning options for students, and parents will be empowered to match their children with the learning options that best meet their needs.?Children will have personalized learning plans and will progress at their own pace. Assessment will be diagnostic and will continuously inform teaching and learning, similar to what occurs through the Khan Academy today. Public education will become more pluralistic and less regulated as consumer choice becomes a bigger component of accountability.
I wrote recently that the Berlin Wall is starting to come down in public education. As this process continues, much of the micromanagement that is inherent in command-and-control organizations will diminish, and many of Rita?s concerns will be addressed. We have a long struggle ahead, but the future looks bright for public education.

Brain scans detect early signs of autism in infants
ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? A new study shows significant differences in brain development in high-risk infants who develop autism starting as early as age 6 months. The findings published in the American Journal of Psychiatry reveal that this abnormal brain development may be detected before the appearance of autism symptoms in an infant's first year of life. Autism is typically diagnosed around the age of 2 or 3.
The study offers new clues for early diagnosis, which is key, as research suggests that the symptoms of autism -- problems with communication, social interaction and behavior -- can improve with early intervention. "For the first time, we have an encouraging finding that enables the possibility of developing autism risk biomarkers prior to the appearance of symptoms, and in advance of our current ability to diagnose autism," says co-investigator Dr. Alan Evans at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital -- the Neuro, McGill University, which is the Data Coordinating Centre for the study.
"Infancy is a time when the brain is being organized and connections are developing rapidly," says Dr. Evans. "Our international research team was able to detect differences in the wiring by six months of age in those children who went on to develop autism. The difference between high-risk infants that developed autism and those that did not was specifically in white matter tract development -- fibre pathways that connect brain regions." The study followed 92 infants from 6 months to age 2. All were considered at high-risk for autism, as they had older siblings with the developmental disorder. Each infant had a special type of MRI scan, known as diffusion tensor imaging, at 6 months and a behavioral assessment at 24 months. The majority also had additional scans at either or both 12 and 24 months.
At 24 months, 30% of infants in the study were diagnosed with autism. White matter tract development for 12 of the 15 tracts examined differed significantly between the infants that developed autism and those who did not. Researchers evaluated fractional anisotropy (FA), a measure of white matter organization based on the movement of water through tissue. Differences in FA values were greatest at 6 and 24 months. Early in the study, infants who developed autism showed elevated FA values along these tracts, which decreased over time, so that by 24 months autistic infants had lower FA values than infants without autism.
The study characterizes the dynamic age-related brain and behavior changes underlying autism -- vital for developing tools to aid autistic children and their families. This is the latest finding from the on-going Infant Brain Imaging Study (IBIS), which is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and brings together the expertise of a network of researchers from institutes across North America. The IBIS study is headquartered at the University of North Carolina, and The Neuro is the Data Coordinating Centre where all IBIS data is centralized.
The IBIS Network is supported by the NIH, Autism Speaks and the Simons Foundation.

Why Having Sound Business Ethics Is So Important To The Success ...
Positive Business Ethics ? Advantages Of Doing Business In This Manner
Matters that may help or harm a company can be seriously influenced by the employment of good business ethics. Your reputation will be good, irrespective of where you go. If you are offline and want an online presence, then you can take that with you. It?s quite true that on the internet you have to place great value on your reputation and image. People do converse online and they do it almost everywhere, including social media platforms. You probably can appreciate what this means. There are many more advantages, though, to having a reputation based on good business ethics. Digital TV On PC
There are plenty of ways to behave with a lack of ethics or scruples. Everyone has seen plenty of examples of unethical actions. There are situations, though, that are not as clear cut where the acts are caused by omission. Ignorance can?t be used as a valid reason, which is something any legal professional will tell you. On the other hand, such acts of omission aren?t likely to occur if you practice good business ethics. You need to place enough care on the matter to ensure you are protected and that you won?t be interested in taking advantage of questionable scenarios. Truth About Six Pack Abs For most people, all one can do is do their part to contribute to society and have a positive impact. Doing something for both yourself and society, when it is all added up, is exactly what you want to accomplish. This is true for everyone, no matter where you are from, or from what society you originate. The same concepts apply to business ethics and what a company chooses to do. You will notice that companies that are counterproductive are typically unethical. Those that are ethical make contributions to society. Any business that acts in an appropriate ethical manner tend to be contributory. This helps everyone involved, not just the ethical business making the decisions. Sonic Producer
Unethical activities typically lead many companies down the deep dark road of legal problems. In such instances, the various fines have been staggering and forced businesses into bankruptcy or nearly so. There are rewards to conduct business along ethical lines and this is just one of them.
Your company may be considered guilty, even if it is innocent, if you have created a negative reputation for your company based on your decision-making processes.
The more unethical but you are in your decision-making process, the more likely it is that you will become more unethical as you do business each and every year. A great example is to consider the ethical behavior that young children may have based upon the choices that they make.
Children of any age will always persist in making bad choices if they are not prevented from doing so. This will expand into other bad behaviors and poor decision-making as time goes on. When the courts intervene because of bad business practices, they are acting in the same way that parents do when their kids are out of line.

Lightroom 4 finally floats into Adobe's Creative Cloud
Adobe's primary tool for tweaking and organizing photos was always destined to be part of the Creative Cloud offering, but for whatever reason it didn't make it in time for launch. As of today though, Lightroom 4 is available to download on PC or 64-bit Mac (or both, since you're allowed multiple installations) as part of a CS6 monthly license. The additional title may not be enough to sway cloud doubters, but even they can't dispute that the subscription approach now delivers more software than the full-on $2599 shrink-wrapped Master Collection.
