NBC to air Kerrigan interview during Olympics

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? A new documentary on former Olympic figure skating rivals Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding that includes an exclusive interview with Kerrigan will air during NBC's Winter Olympics coverage in February.

Mary Carillo will interview both women on the 20th anniversary of their dramatic showdown at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics.

NBC's program will air three months after ESPN's "Tonya and Nancy" documentary, set for Nov. 5. That film includes new interviews with Harding, although ESPN Films said earlier this week it is still trying to persuade Kerrigan to grant an interview.

Both documentaries will recount the Jan. 6, 1994, incident in which Kerrigan was clubbed on the knee after practice for the U.S. championships in a plot masterminded by Harding's ex-husband. At the Olympics, Kerrigan won a silver medal and Harding finished eighth.

In the NBC program, Carillo interviews both Kerrigan and Harding about what they learned and where they are now.

Kerrigan has shunned the spotlight since retiring to focus on raising her three children. Harding is married with a child and has participated in several sports and reality shows.

Pac-12 Media Day: USC coach Lane Kiffin staying in control of offense

USC players Hayes Pullard, Marqise Lee and Coach Lane Kiffin during Pac-12 media Day at Sony Studios July 26, 2013. (Brad Graverson/Los Angeles News Group)

USC coach Lane Kiffin said Friday he was unaware athletic director Pat Haden made a video where he announced he supported Kiffin, "100 percent."

Haden said, "I anticipate the media will ask me if our football coach is on the hot seat this year. ... he is not."

Later, Haden said, "He's a dynamic playcaller in my estimation. I firmly believe we'll bounce back strong."

Haden's video was a preemptive strike before Friday's Pac-12 media day at the Sony Pictures Studios Lot in Culver City. Haden did not attend media day because he is on vacation.

"I didn't know there was going to be a video," Kiffin said. "Obviously it's a positive, not a negative. I'm not surprised by it because I deal with Pat (and school president Max Nikias) on a daily basis."

Some noted in jest that Haden's announcement that he is 100 percent behind Kiffin is 50 percent less than last November when he said, "Lane is my head coach, 150 percent."

Kiffin to call plays

In a move that was anticipated, Kiffin said he decided to call plays this season. During spring practice, Kiffin said he would consider giving up those duties to pay more attention to the entire team.

But he decided to remain the Trojans' playcaller for the fourth straight season.

"I made a decision that it's in the best interest of our football team for me to continue to call plays," Kiffin said. "We have a unique relationship with the skilled guys, offensive guys, it's important because you're communicating with them so much and I think there's an impact in recruiting."

That means offensive coordinator Clay Helton will not call plays despite his new title. Helton was quarterbacks coach last season.

Two quarterbacks?

Kiffin said he might pick a starter in a week or a month but he also did not rule out playing two quarterbacks to start the season.

"It's not ideal," Kiffin said. "But all decisions are made in the best interest of the football team. Even though I don't like it. I'm not going to say it never happens."

Kiffin said he did not know if he would redshirt freshman Max Browne if Browne does not win the starting job.

Running is priority

One thing Kiffin did in the off season was study tapes of last year's games to determine what made USC finish with a 7-6 record.

"In critical situations, there was an inability to run the ball," Kiffin said. "That impacts the whole game. When you add that to the unbelievable amount of turnovers we had, it really hurts."

USC picked third

The Trojans were picked in the media poll to finish behind UCLA and Arizona State in the South Division. Oregon was picked to win the North Division and win the Pac-12 title game.

"It's a total difference," wide receiver Marqise Lee said of the lower expectations from a year ago, when USC was selected No. 1 in the nation. "We still have to play the games though. Last year Notre Dame started unranked but went to the championship game."

Fox says Parkinson's won't be focus of NBC comedy

Fox Show," as Mike Henry, a former local NBC newscaster with Parkinson?s. (AP Photo/NBC, Paul Drinkwater)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Michael J. Fox says Parkinson's disease will not be a major storyline of his upcoming NBC comedy.

On "The Michael J. Fox Show," the actor plays Mike Henry, a former local NBC newscaster with Parkinson's, who left the business to spend more time with his family. The series begins when he decides to return to work now that his kids are older.

At Saturday's Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fox said he didn't think about how others with Parkinson's would react to the show because he doesn't "vet creative instinct."

"I just go with it," he said. "I feel that this is the reflection of my experience and certainly in the pilot it was more prevalent than it is in subsequent scripts. The way I look at life and the reality of Parkinson's, sometimes it's frustrating and sometimes it's funny. I need to look at it that way and other people need to look at it that way. Beyond that we all got our own bag of hammers...I think people will look at that and say, 'Yeah, I need to laugh at my own stuff, too.'"

The premise of the show does have similarities to Fox's real-life story. The actor left "Spin City" in 2000 as he tried different treatments and medications to treat Parkinson's. He also used the opportunity to spend quality time with his four kids during their formative years.

"There's kind of a scrutiny of their stuff that won't exist if I'm being occupied by something else," joked Fox of the distraction of a full-time job.

Fox believes the viewers, however, will not be distracted by his character having Parkinson's on his new series.

"Parkinson's itself there's nothing horrifying to me. It's not horrible. I don't think it's gothic nastiness. There's nothing on the surface horrible about someone with shaking hands."

Since leaving "Spin City," Fox has had recurring roles on shows like "Rescue Me" and "The Good Wife." Those guest spots gave him the itch to do more.

"It really brought me to a place of, 'This is what I do,'" he said. "This is what I was built and programmed to do, and so I wanted to do it. It's what I've loved to do...I thought, 'Why can't I? There's no reason not to do it.'"

Because Fox plays a local NBC newscaster, the show will tap real people to do guest appearances that make the story more believable. Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie are in the pilot. New Jersey governor Chris Christie will appear in an episode as himself.

"A fictional television network didn't give us 22 episodes," Will Gluck, executive producer, said jokingly on why they decided to make Fox's Mike Henry work for NBC.

The Michael J. Fox Show" premieres Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. EST/PST.

At least 77 dead in one of Europe's worst rail disasters in decades

CCTV video captured yesterday's train derailment in Spain that killed at least 77 people.

By Becky Bratu and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

Security cameras captured the horrific moment when a speeding train derailed on a tight curve and smashed into a wall in Spain, killing at least 77 people and injuring 178, including 5 Americans.

The dramatic footage of one of Europe's worst rail disasters, obtained by Spanish newspaper El Pais, appeared to confirm reports that the train had been going too fast as it approached the city of Santiago de Compostela late Wednesday.

One the wrecked cars caught fire, while another slid up a grass embankment and came to rest next to a nearby road.

Images from the scene showed bodies covered in blankets and towels lying next to toppled and crushed carriages as rescuers worked to pull survivors out of broken windows.

"It was going so quickly. ... It seems that on a curve the train started to twist, and the wagons piled up one on top of the other," passenger Ricardo Montesco told Cadena Ser radio station, according to Reuters.

The driver - one of two in the cab at the time of the crash - has been put under formal investigation, a spokeswoman for Galicia's High Court told Reuters.?

Lavandeira Jr / EPA

Scores are killed and injured in a train derailment in NW Spain.

El Pais cited sources close to the investigation saying the driver stated immediately after the crash that he had been traveling at 118 mph on the curve, which had a speed limit of 49 mph.

Trapped in his wrecked cab, he reportedly told supervisors over the radio: ?"We're human! We're human," according to El Pais. "I hope there are no fatalities because they will fall on my conscience,"?he said, according to the newspaper?s source. NBC News was unable to immediately confirm the report.

Five U.S. citizens were among the injured, the State Department said in a statement. It said it had not received reports of any American fatalities but added that the situation "may change as we receive additional information."

There are reports of as many as 100 people wounded and doezens dead in a train derailment in northwestern Spain. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

All of the bodies had been removed from the wreckage by Thursday morning.

So many local residents lined up to donate blood that officials were forced to open additional donation points.

Spain's prime minister, Mariano Rajoy. declared three days of national mourning after visiting the site.

"The scene is shocking, it's Dante-esque," the head of Spain's Galicia region, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, said in a radio interview, according to Reuters.

Local health officials said 178 were injured, of which 95 were still in hospital, of whom 36 - including four children - were in a critical condition.

The crash, which happened at 8:41 p.m. local time (2:41 p.m. ET) Wednesday, was Europe?s deadliest mainline train accident in more than 25 years and Spain's worst in four decades.

It also cast a shadow of tragedy over the entire Galicia region, which had been due to celebrate a public holiday Thursday.

Santiago de Compostela had been preparing for the festival of Saint James, when thousands of Christian pilgrims from around the world pack the streets. It is likely the train was packed full with people traveling for the holiday.

Officials said all of the celebrations, including a traditional High Mass at the city?s centuries-old cathedral, were canceled.

Xoan Rey / EPA

A group of volunteers waiting to give blood to help those injured in the train accident close to Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Wednesday.

The eight-car Alvia express train was traveling from the capital, Madrid, to the city of Ferrol when it derailed about two miles short of Santiago de Compostela station, national train operator Renfe said in a statement.

Spain?s rail network is one of the most modern and successful in Europe, following decades of public investment.

Transport expert and author Christian Wolmar said it was not clear if high-tech safety systems, which override inputs by the driver, would have been in use at the time.

?On high speed lines, the European Train Control System should automatically correct the speed of the train, but this accident may have happened on a stretch of line which is not designated as high-speed,? he said.

Rail workers? union SEMAF expressed ?support for the comrade who has been implicated in this accident? as well as ?condolences? to the victims, according to RTVE.

The crash is Spain?s biggest disaster since the 2004 terror attack at Madrid?s Atocha station that left 191 dead, and its worst train crash since 1972 when a collision left 86 dead.

In November 2000, 155 people were killed when a fire in a tunnel engulfed a funicular train packed with skiers in Austria.

In Montenegro, up to 46 people were killed and nearly 200 injured in 2006 when a packed train derailed and plunged into a ravine outside the capital, Podgorica.

NBC News' Brinley Bruton and Jason Cumming and?Reuters contributed to this report.?

Hitting Mike Costanzo is a tough assignment for any team.

But a club with four left-handed batters in the lineup faces an even more difficult task as Libertyville discovered Wednesday night.

The St. Rita lefty struck out 13 after spotting the Wildcats an early run as the Mustangs won 4-1 in the semifinals of the Phil Lawler Summer Classic at Benedictine University in Lisle.

St. Rita (16-5) will go for its first summer title since 2009 and third since 2005 when it plays Lyons (26-6) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Benedictine.

?I didn?t have it, obviously, early on, but just found a way to work with it,? said Costanzo, who has committed to Austin Peay. ?Had the defense behind me, trusted my ability with what I had (Wednesday night).?

?You never want to feel good going into a game but when you have him on the mound, it?s hard not to feel good,? St. Rita coach Mike Zunica said.

?We really felt the whole way, two or three runs were going to be enough with the stuff he had. ... We thought he had electric stuff from the bullpen all the way up to the first inning, even though the first inning didn?t go very well.?

Libertyville (18-5) opened the bottom of the first by putting the first two runners on base as Jimmy Govern had an infield hit and Costanzo hit Matt Reed with a pitch. Costanzo?s error moved the runners up and Mitch Townsend?s groundout scored Govern to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

Then Costanzo, who walked five and allowed four hits, settled in and Libertyville didn?t get another runner past second until the seventh inning.

St. Rita, meanwhile, edged ahead with the help of some defensive lapses by Libertyville.

The Mustangs went up 2-1 with two unearned runs in the third, scoring on Tyler Halas? sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk to A.J. Fuller. The Wildcats had two errors in the inning.

Another error helped the Mustangs make it 3-1 in the fourth, when Nate Soria drove in a run with a forceout. Soria?s sacrifice fly in the sixth drove in the game?s only earned run.

Andrew Plunkett took the loss, going six innings and allowing eight hits and four runs (one earned). He walked four and struck out three.

Anthony Faron was 3-for-4 for St. Rita and Shane Peisker went 2-for-2 with a double.

Jim Boeheim on Canada trip: Syracuse players will report for practice Aug. 15

Syracuse, NY -- Summer vacation for Syracuse University basketball players ends early this year. The Orange men, scheduled to play four exhibition games in Canada next month, will report to the Melo Center for active duty by the middle of August.

SU coach Jim Boeheim said practice likely will start on or near Aug. 15. The Orange will probably work out in the Melo Center for four days before departing for Montreal on Aug. 19 or 20, Boeheim said. Syracuse will play two exhibition games in Montreal and two in Ottawa.

The Orange face Bishops University (Aug. 21) and McGill University (Aug. 22) in Montreal. Those games take place in McGill's arena. SU then travels to Ottawa to take on Carleton University (Aug. 23) at Scotiabank Place and Ottawa University (Aug. 24) in Montpetit Hall. Tickets are available for all games.

Boeheim planned for an international trip this summer because of the wealth of young and inexperienced players on his 2013-14 roster. The Orange signed five freshmen to letters of intent. It will introduce a rookie point guard (Toronto native Tyler Ennis) to college basketball and welcome a Duke transfer who sat out all of last season (Michael Gbinije).

The NCAA permits teams that schedule international summer games to practice during an otherwise prohibited period.

"This is a great experience for all the guys like Mike, who sat out. And Dajuan (Coleman) didn't get much time last year with the injury, so it's a great opportunity for him," Boeheim said. "And the freshman point guard. So yeah, this is a great thing for us. It couldn't have come at a better time."

Boeheim, in Las Vegas this week with USA Basketball, isn't sure how many of his players will make the trip. Sophomore forward Jerami Grant contracted mononucleosis this summer while training with USA Basketball's U19 team. He journeyed to Prague in the Czech Republic with the team, only to be diagnosed with mono and scratched from the roster.

Grant stayed in Prague to cheer his teammates. (His mother, Beverly, said he could not bear the immediate, long plane trip home.)

Whether Grant accompanies Syracuse to Canada has not been decided. He has spent time this week in Syracuse.

"There's a lot of things like that," Boeheim said, "that we're going to have to determine probably within the next week to 10 days."

Boeheim expects to know more about the status of his freshmen soon, too. All of SU's rookies must be cleared by the NCAA before they can join their teammates on an international trip. Tyler Roberson, a freshman from Roselle Catholic in New Jersey, has been taking classes at home to ensure his freshman eligibility.

"Getting all of them cleared is not always easy to do on time," Boeheim said. "So we probably won't know that for another two weeks. Then, we'll know exactly who's going. Whoever goes, we'll have a good group and it'll be good for the guys that go."

Foul-smelling plant blooms near US Capitol

A titan arum, a huge plant native to Indonesia, went into full malodorous bloom on Sunday evening at the US Botanic Garden conservatory, drawing thousands of visitors seeking to inhale its putrid stench.

An enormous plant on Capitol Hill is in bloom, after vigorously emitting a putrid smell that many likened to that of a rotting corpse.

Kept at the United States Botanic Garden Conservatory, the titan arum is famous among botanists for having the largest unbranched inflorescense of any plant in the world, which one way of saying that it is the world's biggest flower (though technically it's made of several hundred flowers, like a daisy). In the wild, it can grow up to 12 feet tall.

But the plant, which is native to the steamy rain forests of Sumatra, Indonesia, is probably best known for the malodorous M.O. that it has evolved to attract pollinators.

"It was a little like when a trash truck passes you on a hot day," says?Laura Condeluci, the Botanic Garden's public programs coordinator, in a phone interview.?"It's definitely that rotting smell."

When titan arum blooms ? and it does so unpredictably, sometime waiting years or even decades to share its revolting stench with the world ? it uses the noxious fragrance to attract dung beetles and carrion-eating insects, which can then serve to spread the plant's pollen.?

The fetid odor is only one of titan arum's methods to draw bugs. The plant also generates heat; when blooming, parts of the plant warm to roughly human body temperature. The warmth not only helps the mephitic scent carry over larger distances, but it also helps fool any visitors into further believing that it is composed of recently deceased flesh.

"You look around and you think, where's the dead animal?" said?Bill McLaughlin, the Botanic Garden's plant curator.

'It comes to find you.'

This particular titan arum had never bloomed before. It had been living at a facility near the Botanic Gardens, when horticulturalists noticed that the plant was starting to flower. The putrescent plant was transported to a display area at the Botanic Garden Conservatory, where it grew from four to eight feet in just ten days.

Then, on Sunday evening, Mr.?McLaughlin saw that the plant's collar was loosening a bit. He climbed up a ladder and peered inside.

"I got the first little waft of odor and a little pulse of heat," he said. "It was quite a queasy odor."

GOP?s McFadden Builds From Blank Political Slate

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? When Republican Senate candidate Mike McFadden raised $765,000 in the inaugural month of his bid to take on Minnesota Sen. Al Franken, he sent an important signal about his ability to compete in a high-profile race that will depend heavily on money.

But prowess with donors alone is no guarantee that McFadden, a successful businessman and political newcomer, will be the party?s choice to challenge Franken. Jim Abeler, a veteran state representative, is already in the race, and state Sen. Julianne Ortman ? another longtime lawmaker ? said she will announce her plans soon.

Lawmakers like Abeler and Ortman have long voting records that help define them as candidates, but McFadden has been a blank slate politically. The wealthy co-CEO of a financial services firm has held no public events since joining the race in late May, but he is starting to speak out about issues and strategy in one-on-one interviews.

?I knew it was important that we get out and raise money, so I worked hard on it,? McFadden told The Associated Press in a recent interview. ?And the message of let?s make government more effective, let?s focus on job creation, let?s focus on education, let?s have a health care system that works ? that is really resonating, and it?s causing people to open their pocketbooks and contribute to this campaign.?

Both McFadden and Abeler have said they?d pursue the GOP?s endorsement in the race, but might still run in the primary without it. Abeler acknowledged he hasn?t come close to matching McFadden?s early fundraising. ?You can be the front-runner in the marathon after a mile, but that doesn?t say a lot about where you are at the end of the race,? he said.

The race is among the broader contest for Senate control. Republicans need a net gain of six seats to flip the majority in their favor, and so far Minnesota hasn?t ranked among the top targets.

The list of McFadden donors reads like a who?s-who of Minnesota business elite. It includes CEOs of companies including Target, Polaris, Schwan?s and Slumberland, as well as numerous leaders and executives at companies big and small, and several dozen bankers, financial planners, investors and other businesspeople. Many contributed the legal maximum, meaning he won?t be able to tap them again for more dollars. McFadden said many also committed to help him raise more funds.

Chris Heim, CEO of Eden Prairie-based 2ndWave Software, is among those who gave the fullest amount possible.

?I?ve known Mike since college, I?ve known him in the business world and so when I saw he was running I contacted him to donate money,? Heim said. ?I really consider myself an independent, but partisanship is what is really turning me off in a big way and I think Mike is pragmatic and would look for solutions.?

Support from donors like that will be necessary to keep up with Franken, one of the Democratic Party?s most successful fundraisers. He took in nearly $2 million from April through June of this year, and as of July 1 had $3 million in the bank. In 2008, Franken and incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman combined spent almost $50 million in their hard-fought contest that ended with a statewide recount and an ensuing legal challenge that finally saw Franken win by 312 votes out of nearly 3 million cast.

A close examination of McFadden?s campaign report shows plenty of donors already gave top dollar toward a potential general election campaign, putting about one-third of McFadden?s money off-limits unless he secures the GOP nomination.

While Franken?s fundraising totals lean heavier on a greater number of individual donors giving smaller amounts, he also boasts powerful fundraising connections: in April, late-night TV host Conan O?Brien hosted a fundraising event at his home to benefit Franken?s campaign.

But the race will come down to more than money. To that end, McFadden has started to flesh out his positions on top issues. He takes a traditional Republican line on some, saying he wouldn?t vote for tax increases and lining himself up as against abortion rights.

But he steered a middle course on some hot-button issues. On immigration, McFadden said any changes to immigration law would have to start with securing U.S. borders, but said he isn?t opposed to finding a way for millions of immigrants now here illegally to obtain citizenship.

?As Republicans, we need to get our arms around this,? McFadden said. He said he wants to see ?outreach to the Hispanic community, because if they?re not already Republicans they have the potential to be great Republicans because they have strong family values, they?re entrepreneurial, they work hard, they?re industrious. We need to appeal to them.?

While describing himself as a strong believer in gun rights, McFadden also said he could vote for widening background checks for gun purchases.

?It does bother me that someone who couldn?t pass a background check at Walmart could then go right down to a gun show and buy a gun,? McFadden said. ?So I would consider expanded background checks, specifically closing that gun show loophole.?

McFadden said if he?s elected and Republicans control the Senate, he?d support a bill to repeal President Obama?s health-care overhaul ? ?but that would have to be in conjunction with real solutions. We do need to address costs and accessibility. The fact that there?s Americans with pre-existing conditions who can?t get access to insurance is wrong. Most Republicans think that?s wrong. We need to address that, but not by nationalizing 20 percent of the economy.?

A major field of debate between Franken and his opponent is likely to be how to reduce the national debt. McFadden said Congress has to tackle the costs of Social Security and Medicare, and he suggested one way could be raising the eligibility age of 65 for both programs.

?Not for people near the retirement age now ? that?s not fair because they don?t have time to change their planning,? McFadden said. ?But it seems to me that some conversation around some age, and below, that the age upon which you receive these benefits would increase. The logic behind this would be that the mortality rate has gone up since those programs were created.?

Democrats have already seized on McFadden?s comments about changing entitlement programs. Franken has said Social Security should be off the table.

S&P 500 edges higher, helped by gold miners

NEW YORK (AP) ? Mining companies and banks helped the stock market overcome some disappointing quarterly performances on Monday.

Poor second-quarter results from a handful of large U.S. companies weighed on stocks. McDonald's Corp. fell after its results missed expectations and it warned of a tough year ahead. Media company Gannett dropped after its revenue fell short of financial analysts' expectations.

But gold and copper prices boosted mining companies, and that helped nudge the market to another all-time high.

Investors are looking ahead a busy week of corporate earnings. More than 150 companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index are reporting quarterly earnings over the next four days.

For the most part, corporations have reported results that have beaten analysts' expectations, though there have been some big letdowns. On Friday, Microsoft plunged after it reported declining revenue and a big write-off on its new tablet computer. Coca-Cola slumped last Tuesday after the company said it sold fewer soft drinks in North America.

"Earnings are not stellar," said Brad Reynolds, chief investment officer at investment adviser LJPR. "It just seems that the market is OK with that."

Investors were more than OK with gold Monday. Its price climbed above $1,300 for first time in a month, giving mining stocks a big lift.

Gold gained $43.10, or 3.3 percent, to $1,336 an ounce. Copper rose 4 cents, or 1.3 percent, to $3.19 per pound.

Among mining companies, Newmont Mining rose $1.66, or 5.8 percent, to $30.35. Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold gained 59 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $29.15.

Gold plunged last month because investors thought the Federal Reserve was close to ending its economic stimulus. That pushed up interest rates. And when rates rise, it costs investors more to hang onto gold, which pays no interest.

But with the Fed now willing to continue the stimulus, rates are falling.

The S&P 500 index rose three points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,695.53 on Monday. The index is at an all-time high, though trading volumes were lower than average.

Five of the 10 industry group in the S&P 500 rose. Gains were led by financial companies, which have posted some of the strongest earnings for the quarter so far. They are expected to report average earnings growth of 23 percent. Bank of America added 17 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $14.92.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose nearly 1.8 points, or 0.01 percent, to 15,545.55. The slump in McDonald's stock weighed on the index. The restaurant chain's stock fell $2.69, or 2.7 percent, to $97.58.

The Nasdaq composite climbed 12.77 points, or 0.4 percent, to 3,600.39.

One sector that struggled was homebuilders. Sales of previously occupied homes slipped in June to an annual rate of 5.08 million, the National Association of Realtors said Monday.

As a result, Pulte Group fell 22 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $19.14. Lennar fell 73 cents, or 2.1 percent to $34.80.

The stock market has surged in July following a tough June. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke spooked investors on June 19, when he seemed to signal that the Fed's tapering of bond purchases would start later this year. Then, after a couple of weeks of panic in stock and bond markets, Bernanke dialed things back on July 10. That's when he told the National Bureau of Economic Research, in a speech in Cambridge, Mass., that the economy still needed help from the Fed's low rates.

The Fed is buying $85 billion of bonds each month to keep long-term interest rates low and to encourage spending.

The S&P 500 has gained 5.6 percent in July. The market last did better than 5.6 percent in October 2011.

Small-company stocks have fared even better. The Russell 2000 closed above 1,000 for the first time on July 5 and is up 7.8 percent for the month. That signals that investors have become more comfortable buying riskier assets.

In commodities trading, the price of oil fell 93 cents, or 0.9 percent, to $106.94 a barrel.

In government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note was unchanged from Friday at 2.48 percent. As recently as July 5, the yield was as high as 2.74 percent.

As of Monday, 63 percent of the companies that have reported earnings have exceeded expectations. That's above the historical average.

S&P 500 companies are forecast to report earnings growth of 3.6 percent for the second quarter compared with a year earlier, according to data from S&P Capital IQ.

Analysts expect earnings growth to climb to nearly 6 percent in the third quarter and 11 percent in the fourth quarter.

Those forecasts may prove optimistic if economic growth doesn't accelerate in the second half of the year, said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial.

"I'm a little suspect that we're going to see double-digit (earnings) growth," Sheldon said. "We're more likely in a period of moderate-to-sluggish growth."

Among other stocks making big moves.

? Hasbro Inc.'s stock rose $1.49, or 3.3 percent, to $46.87. The nation's second biggest toy maker said Monday that it is expanding a merchandising deal with The Walt Disney Co. for properties including Marvel and Star Wars.

? Yahoo fell $1.25, or 4.3 percent, to $27.86. The company said Monday that activist investor Dan Loeb and two other directors nominated by his hedge fund, Third Point LLC, are leaving Yahoo's board after big gains in the company's stock price the past year.

? Kimberly-Clark, which makes Kleenex tissue and Huggies diapers, fell $1.81, or 1.8 percent, to $97.68. The company on Monday reported revenue that fell short of financial analyst's expectations.

Open East: is this London?s best value music festival?

Open East Festival

But don?t pack your straw hat and facepaint away just yet ? a brand new urban weekender is just days away, and, at just ?9.50, tickets cost less than a pair of knock-off Ray Bans.

Taking place in the freshly relandscaped north section of Stratford?s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Open East Festival brings international music acts, gourmet eats and plenty more to E20 on July 27 and 28.

The line-up for Saturday sees Scot-rock stalwarts The Waterboys?do their Celtic-influenced thing, with Malian music legends Amadou & Mariam heading up a West African supergroup in the day?s earlier slot. On Sunday, it?s the turn of Jamaican reggae singer U-Roy, whose headline slot follows a collaborative show from afrobeat icon Seun Kuti, jazz pianist Robert Glasper and Brooklynite hip hoppers Dead Prez.

As well as scores of other music acts, (full listings right here), the weekend also brings dance and theatre shows (including an appearance from ?War Horse? star Joey), a beer and food festival and an arty car-boot fair with stalls manned by the likes of Gavin Turk and Pure Evil.?Not bad for the price of gastropub burger, we?re sure you?ll agree.

LOOK: Tornado Damages College Campus

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio -- A tornado packing 110 mph winds hit Ursuline College in northeast Ohio early Saturday morning, collapsing a wall of the school's athletic center and damaging other buildings but causing no injuries, officials said.

The EF1 twister hit about 3:35 a.m. northwest of the college and continued across part of the campus, said meteorologist William Comeaux of the National Weather Service in Cleveland. It reached 100-200 yards wide and traveled 1.3 miles.

Only a few students were on campus at the time, and they weren't close to the athletic center that was hardest hit, a college spokeswoman said.

"The blessing is that there was no loss of life or injury," Sister Diana Stano, president of the 1,500-student school about 13 miles east of Cleveland said on the college's website.

No one answered the main number for the college Saturday evening, but a recorded message said the campus was closed Saturday and Sunday to assess the damage.

The storm caused an external wall of the school's O'Brien Athletic Center to collapse and destroyed part of the roof. It also damaged several other buildings, including the Dauby Science Center and the Ralph M. Besse Library. Many trees were uprooted or destroyed and other campus facilities had minor damage.

College spokeswoman Angela DelPrete said only about five students were on campus at the time and they were about 1,000 feet from the gymnasium. She described debris scattered around the campus and broken windows. Weather service photos showed roof tiles torn away on the gymnasium exposing splintered wood and support beams.

Stano told The Plain Dealer that Ursuline was accepted as an NCAA Division II school only last week.

"Now we don't have a place to play," she said.

Ursuline was founded by Roman Catholic nuns as the first women's college in Ohio. Men now also attend the school.

Despite the damage Saturday, Comeaux said, "It's a beautiful area with lots of trees."

He said it's been about two years since a tornado has touched down in the region; the state averages 17-19 tornadoes per year. A disaster relief fund will be established to help rebuild the campus, the website said.

[TUTO] Comment installer Android sur des portables sous windows mobile

Salut ? tous

Tout d'abord, je tiens a pr?ciser que ce tutoriel n'est valable que pour certain portable dont voici la liste:

- HTC Touch Diamond
- HTC Topaz ( Touch Diamond 2 )
- HTC Blackstone ( Touch HD )
- HTC Tilt
- HTC Raphael ( Touch Pro )
- HTC Rhodium ( Touch Pro II )
- Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

___________________________________________

2/ Installation d'Android
