Quick as a flash of disco lights glinting off a sea of expensive sunglasses, both Wireless and Lovebox have come and gone. But don?t pack your straw hat and facepaint away just yet ? a brand new urban weekender is just days away, and, at just ?9.50, tickets cost less than a pair of knock-off Ray Bans.
Taking place in the freshly relandscaped north section of Stratford?s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Open East Festival brings international music acts, gourmet eats and plenty more to E20 on July 27 and 28.
The line-up for Saturday sees Scot-rock stalwarts The Waterboys?do their Celtic-influenced thing, with Malian music legends Amadou & Mariam heading up a West African supergroup in the day?s earlier slot. On Sunday, it?s the turn of Jamaican reggae singer U-Roy, whose headline slot follows a collaborative show from afrobeat icon Seun Kuti, jazz pianist Robert Glasper and Brooklynite hip hoppers Dead Prez.
As well as scores of other music acts, (full listings right here), the weekend also brings dance and theatre shows (including an appearance from ?War Horse? star Joey), a beer and food festival and an arty car-boot fair with stalls manned by the likes of Gavin Turk and Pure Evil.?Not bad for the price of gastropub burger, we?re sure you?ll agree.
