It?s no secret that Houston doesn?t have great Chinese food. Sure, if you go down to Chinatown, you can get some pretty fantastic stuff, but the Chinese food across the city (outside of Chinatown area) leaves something to be desired.
There?s really nothing quite like the Chinese of New York, where on every corner awaits the exact same food inside the exact same restaurant, where the only things that are distinct are the name (although, not always) and the prices (usually by no more than a dollar difference though).
Of course, my favorite such place in NYC was West Place, or as we called it, because of the way they greeted us when we entered, ?Worst Place.? Though it was called Worst Place, there was nothing worst about it. Worst Place was by far the Best Place.
Take the lunch special for instance: $5.95 for three meats, fried/white/brown rice, soup or drink. What? That?s actually three meals worth of food, for less than six bucks.
Their non-lunch specials are nice too. Seven dollars for a ?combo? with your favorite main course, rice, and an eggroll. Add fifty cents if you want soup instead of an eggroll. Yes, that?s basically two meals worth of food. And a free drink for every ten bucks you spend.
The prices are phenomenal. But the food itself is unbelievable too. I never liked General Tso?s before because I never had good General Tso?s. But now I have and know that it can be amazing (still don?t know how to pronounce ?Tso? though.) Chicken and broccoli? Yes, please. Pepper chicken or pepper shrimp. Please sir, may I have some more? Short ribs? Oh yes.
So, this is my tribute to Worst Place. Great Chinese is possible to find in Houston, but phenomenal Chinese only exists on 123rd and Amsterdam Ave.
