What Rocks: The Week?s Best in the Geoblogosphere

(I apologize for slackin? on this feature the past few weeks, it?s been busy!)

Each Monday?I pick five posts from?the previous week in?the?geoscience blogosphere that caught my eye. I limit it to just five because I want those who are not already plugged into this community to get a manageable sampling of the awesome stuff out there.

Here is my list for May 16-22, 2011:

  • Craig McClain of Deep Sea News blogs about a recently published paper in which he and colleagues?propose a new subdivision of Earth?s geologic time into the time of life and pre-life. I haven?t had a chance to read the paper, but it?s an intriguing idea. Also, this post is also a nice example of how to use your blog to get a good discussion going about your own paper.?
  • Ryan?Andreson of?Martian Chronicles posts an excellent summary of the 5th and final Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) meeting to discuss potential landing sites on the red planet.?Writing down the?hypotheses, pros, and cons of each site is a good thought exercise for any researcher faced with multiple options.
  • Anne Jefferson of Highly Allochthonous writes?about how?human-made levees give us the illusion of flood control.??This post?artfully combines?anecdotes, hard data, and clear explantion ? a great example of what science blogs can contribute (note: this was also noticed by Scientific American and cross-posted on their guest blog).
  • Garry Hayes of Geotripper has a series of posts discussing California?s decision to close numerous state parks due to a budget shortfall. Start with this post about Castle Crags.?
  • Finally, submissions to the monthly geoscience blog carnival, The Accretionary Wedge, are due this Friday (the 27th) over at En Tequila Es Verdad. The theme is simple: weird geology.

* This digest is what catches my eye throughout the week. With?scores of posts a week from geoscience blogs I?m sure to miss a lot. Don?t hesitate to let me know about?other great posts?in the geoblogosphere via Twitter, e-mail, or in the comment thread.
